This afternoon, Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova joined District 49 Superintendent Peter Hilts and Principal Cassi MacArthur to celebrate Remington Elementary School receiving an Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Distinguished Schools of Excellence Award.

News Release --Six Colorado educators receive Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
Earlier this week, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced its 2025 recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). This year’s list of award winners included six Colorado educators. The PAEMST is considered the nation’s highest honor for K-12 mathematics and science teachers and was given to 336 teachers from across the country.

News Release -- Colorado’s October 2024 student count shows slight declines in pre-kindergarten and early high school grades; increased diversity
The Colorado Department of Education today released data from the state's October student count taken in the fall of 2024; this information is used to determine state funding for public schools. The data shows a slight decline in PK-12 student enrollment with a total of 881,065 students, a decrease of 0.1% compared to October 2023.

News Release -- Colorado State Board of Education hears updates on multilingual learners and the READ Act
The Colorado State Board of Education’s first meeting of the new year included the Colorado Department of Education’s State of State for Multilingual Learners report, a four-year independent evaluation and program update on the READ Act, and a rulemaking hearing for the administration of the Exceptional Children’s Educational Act (ECEA). The board will consider ECEA rule changes during its next meeting in February.

News Release - State Board of Education welcomes four new board members
In a ceremony held just before its January meeting, the Colorado State Board of Education welcomed four new members. Colorado Supreme Court Justice Richard Gabriel performed the swearing-in for Kristi Burton Brown (CD 4), Kathy Gebhardt (CD 2), Yazmin Navarro (CD 8); and Sherri Wright (CD 3). Navarro completed her oath of office in both English and Spanish and is the first board member in recent memory to do a bilingual oath.

News Release -- Colorado Department of Education receives $1.6 million annual grant to strengthen School-Based Mental Health Services
Colorado Commissioner of Education Susana Córdova announced the Colorado Department of Education will receive a $1.6 million yearly grant from the U.S. Department of Education to enhance mental health services for students across the state.

During its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, the State Board of Education heard recommendations from the 1241 Task Force, which was created to make improvements to the accountability and accreditation system and released its final report last week.

News Release - Colorado Accountability Task Force recommends overhaul of state education accountability system
A task force created to examine the state’s education accountability system is recommending a major overhaul, including adjustments to ratings for schools and districts, to better reflect the achievement of different student groups and to provide parents, guardians, and family members with a clearer understanding of how well schools prepare students for life after high school.
