Example of Discipline Processes for Secondary Schools
Nicolet High School, Behavior Management Flow Chart
Nicolet High School, Glendale, WI
The chart differentiates between teacher-managed behaviors (disruption, defiance, disrespect, dress code violation, inappropriate language, property misuse, physical contact, tardiness, lack of preparedness, electronic devices) and office-managed behaviors (chronic teacher managed behaviors with 3 or 6 SIR, fighting, academic dishonesty, harassment, bullying, truancy, property damage, forgery, theft, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, weapons, vandalism, bomb threat or false alarm, arson, inappropriate displays of affection).
Starting at the top of the flow chart with the observance of a problem behavior, we ask whether the behavior is office managed or not. If not, use teacher consequences such as a warning, seat adjustment, or problem solving to address. If the behavior is unchanged, the teacher completes a SIR and assigns concrete action. If the behavior is still unchanged and the teacher has contacted parents and given 3 or 6 SIRs in the same grading period, write a referral to the office. If 3 or 6 SIRs have not been given, the teacher continues management until 3 or 6 SIRs are collected.
If the problem observed is an office-managed behavior, send the student to the office or call the office to have the student. An office referral is written, an administrator promptly determines the consequence, and then follows through on the consequence. Afterwards, the administrator provides feedback to the teacher in a timely manner.
