CoMath Update for March 10, 2023
I'm a week later than I wanted to be with the March CoMath Update, but so much happened in that week! We now have a bill in the legislature for math education and the webpage was launched for the K-12 math curricula grant program.
HB23-1231: Math in Pre-kindergarten Through Twelfth Grade
House Bill 1231, titled "Math in Pre-kindergarten Through Twelfth Grade," was introduced into the Colorado legislature on Tuesday. The bill was accompanied by a press conference covered by Chalkbeat, the Colorado Sun, The Gazette, Colorado Public Radio, KKTV (with video), among others. The bill is scheduled to receive its first hearing in the House Education Committee at 1:30 pm on Thursday, March 16 in HCR 0107.
CDE ESSER K-12 Mathematics Curricula Grant Program
CDE's grant program for K-12 mathematics materials is now accepting applications through Friday, April 19. Interested applicants are encouraged to complete the intent to apply by April 5. Some documents and details are still being posted to the website so we appreciate your patience if a link is broken or some information is missing.
Long-Term Substitute Opportunity
Nederland Middle-Senior High School is looking for a long-term substitute for middle school math starting April 10th through the end of the school year. Contact Principal Gavan Goodrich for more information.
Opportunity to Participate in Research
The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is looking for districts to participate in 4th and 5th grade research about a new professional development program. Simulated Instruction in Mathematics Professional Development (SIMPD) has demonstrated positive impacts on the quality of math instruction and AIR has received a grant to run a randomized control trial study where local coaches are trained and teachers participate in the professional development. All costs and needed equipment are covered by the grant including compensation for teachers and coaches as well as training costs. There will be an intervention cohort that will participate in training and data collect 2023-2024. The “business as usual” cohort will just do data collection in 2023-2024 and receive the trainings in 2024-2025. If you are interested, contact Raymond Johnson (johnson_r@cde.state.co.us) to be put in touch with the project leads.
Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics
CCTM is seeking candidates to run for multiple board positions this spring, including NCTM Representative and Region Representatives from Region 1, Region 4, and Region 7.
CCTM is also planning an event for the Denver area this summer on June 29, to follow the NCSM Summer Leadership Academy (see below). More details will be forthcoming.
NCTM Virtual Conference
The NCTM 2023 Virtual Conference will be held from March 29 through April 1. The theme for this year’s virtual conference is Amplify & Activate in and Beyond the Classroom, and the live sessions during the week are scheduled for the evening as to allow greater participation from classroom teachers.
