CoMath Update for January 17, 2020

Event News

• As the Joint Mathematics Meetings wrap up in Denver, there's still time (as of this writing) to register for tomorrow's Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival. The event will be held at the Colorado Convention Center, Mile High Ballroom 4a-4c, from 1:00 to 3:00. The event is a celebration of mathematics through games, problems, and activities centered on creative and collaborative inquiry.
• The next meeting of the Colorado Math Leaders (CML) is Wednesday, January 22 from 10:00 to 2:00 in the Cherry Creek School District. Forefront Math will be presenting and sponsoring lunch and we'll be talking about connecting mathematical representations as part of our Taking Action book study. • CCTM is hosting a Meet and Greet in Grand Junction on January 23 from 4:00 to 6:00 at the KAFM Radio Room at 1310 Ute Avenue. There will be food and drinks, napkin math, and great conversations. Anyone who teaches math at any level is welcome to attend, and the purpose of the event is to bring math teachers together in a networking opportunity and to help CCTM better understand how it can serve teachers.
• The 2020 MidSchoolMath National Conference will be held in Sante Fe, NM on March 6-7. This year's conference features Geoffrey Canada, and Toya J. Frank, and Dan Meyer will be offering a pre-conference workshop on March 5. Standard registration is $495 through February 7 and $595 afterwards, with the pre-conference workshop costing an additional $150.
• Math Jam (formerly Math Circles) at CSU in Fort Collins is hosting Sonia Kovalevsky Day on March 12, 2020 from 8:30 to 3:00. It's an opportunity for high school-aged women and their teachers to join Math Jam in celebrating women in mathematics. • Math Jam Summer Camp 2020 will take place from June 15-19. Registration isn't open yet, but check out their fancy flyer on their website.

PD Opportunities

• CDE's Office of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education will be offering a Teaching Math to English Learners workshop in Ellicott on Friday, January 31 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Be sure to register ASAP on CDE's professional development site because the workshop will be cancelled without sufficient preregistration numbers.
• WIDA has developed six self-paced online classes that will support educators in getting their 45 hours required for recertification. Two of the classes are focused on mathematics and STEM: Developing Language for Learning in Mathematics and Doing and Talking STEM.

Grants and Awards

• The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are the nation’s highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science. The PAEMST program is pleased to announce that the 2019–2020 nomination and application cycle for K–6th grade science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teachers is currently open.
  
  The Awards were established by Congress in 1983 and are administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The President may recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers each year. Presidential Awardees receive a certificate signed by the President; a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities; a $10,000 award from NSF; and join a prestigious cadre of more than 5,000 teacher-alumni from across the nation.
  
  Please consider nominating a talented teacher using the PAEMST website today. If you are interested in applying yourself, you can begin an application at www.paemst.org. The 2019–2020 nomination deadline is March 1, 2020, and the application deadline is May 1, 2020.
• The MoneyWi$er Financial Innovation Awards will designate honorees in four categories: Student Scholarship ($1500), Educator ($3500), School ($10,000), and School District ($15,000). This is a great opportunity for schools doing great things with financial literacy education, such as business math or consumer math courses. See the MoneyWi$er website for all the details and application procedures. Applications are due to later than March 15, 2020.

Job Openings

• University Schools High School in Greeley has an immediate opening for a high school math teacher. See the University Schools website and job board for more information.
• Roosevelt High School in Johnstown is looking for a math teacher for the spring semester to teach Algebra 2 and Geometry. The job isn't currently posted on the district website, so contact Brian Littlefield by email if interested.
