Igniting Background Knowledge (5-10 minutes)
Activity: Ruler Warm-Up and Ruler Warm-Up Answer Key
Directions:
Before delving into the lesson let’s warm up the students' brains.

Give students the Warm-Up and have them read the directions. Encourage them to use actual rulers if they would like to use something tactile: Ruler Warm Up. You can ask them to work individually for a few minutes and then check with another student.

Check their answers using the Ruler Warm-Up Answer Key.

Why are we doing this? The ruler warm-up will allow students to physically divide fractions in a measurement setting. This will help them comprehend conceptually what it means to divide.

Activity: Discussion on solutions
Focus: *MP3: Construct Viable Arguments
Directions:
- Take the sample student answers & questions from Step 2.
- Hand them out to the students or have them viewable
- If you are doing this with a whole class: Group students according to their solutions on the pre-screener and have them discuss their similarities and differences.
- If you are doing this with an individual or a small group, discuss the answers as a group.
- Then have them answer these questions as a group. (Visit the Resource Bank to learn more about “Grouping.”)
- If students get stuck understanding or explaining, here are some questions you can use to guide their thinking: Why did Chris divide the cups into fourths? What do the numbers in each circle represent? Why did he draw 5 circles? What do the numbers Jo is using represent?
Why are students doing this/what are they getting out of it?
This part of the lesson intends to generate prior knowledge of the division of fractions and verify students are ready to complete this toolkit.
