After

Before this lesson:

Students should be fluent in understanding the purpose of numerators and denominators compared to the whole. If a student can complete this Identifying Fractions & Answers activity with little to no help and with ease, they are ready for this toolkit lesson.

Students Do:

Students can identify that a denominator shows how a shape is partitioned equally and that a numerator identifies the part of the whole. When shown an order from a pizza joint, the student can read, understand, and cut a slice that is ⅓ of the whole pizza.

This Toolkit Lesson:

focuses on placing fractions on a number line.

Students Do:

Complete activities to determine where a fraction would be placed on a line in the real world.  For example, pulling a shade halfway down the window or giving one-third of your chocolate bar to a friend.

After this lesson:

Students will have the foundational knowledge of the meaning of fractions and how to visually place them on any number line.

Students Do:

When cooking, the student can figure out how to double a recipe with the amounts of ingredients.
