Mathematical Goals
This toolkit will address adding and subtracting using within 20 (0-20). This lesson will help you assess how well students understand the concepts of (1.OA.C.6):
- Add and subtract within 20
- Demonstrate fluency for addition and subtraction within 10
- Use strategies such as counting on, making ten, decomposing a number leading to a ten, using the relationship between addition and subtraction, and creating equivalent but easier or known sums
- Using models or drawings to represent problem-solving addition and subtraction word problems

Mathematical Practice Standards
Math practice standards are thinking strategies for developing skills and habits in math learning. They focus on concepts to cultivate proficiency and prepare students for real-world applications. “These practices rest on important ‘processes and proficiencies’ with longstanding importance in mathematics education.” The Math Practices describe ways in which students ought to engage with the content as they grow in their mathematical expertise.
