Adding 3 Digit Numbers - Grades K-2

Summary

This toolkit will help students make connections between a concrete model (Base-10 Blocks) and a written representation method (Partial Sums) when adding three-digit numbers.

Meets either Colorado academic standards or mathematical practice standards

Goals and Standards

Colorado Academic Standards:

  • Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds. (CCSS: 2.NBT.B.7)

Mathematical Practice Standards:

  • MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
    • Make sense of place value by modeling quantities with drawings or equations.
  • MP7: Look for and make use of structure
    • Use the base-ten structure to add and subtract, composing and decomposing ones, tens and hundreds as necessary.

Learning Goals:

  • Use concrete models to accurately add within 1,000.
  • Relate concrete models to written representation methods when adding within 1,000.
